The total number of visitors to DI Yogyakarta increased from 2.84 million in 2013 to 5.23 million in 2017 (Figure 1). Foreign tourist arrivals are only a small part of this - in 2013 only 8.3% of total arrivals and in 2017 a little less, at 7.6%. The average annual growth rate for foreign tourist arrivals is 10.5% between 2013 and 2017 and for domestic tourist arrivals of 12.4% during the same time period. DI Yogyakarta received only 2.8% of all foreign tourist visitors in Indonesia in 2017.

TDA Yogyakarta is the host of various attractions, especially culture based. A summary of the main attractions along with the number of 2017 visitors is set in Table 1.19 below. It should be noted that the most popular tourist attractions are not cultural attractions: Zoos, Smart Parks (science parks intended for children), and Instagrammable optical illusion galleries (De Mata Trick museum) are the top three attractions. Although in most cases there is a division between foreign and domestic visitors, there is no information whether this is a resident or a tourist. Central Java has experienced more substantive growth in visitor arrivals since 2013 (Figure 3). The number of domestic tourist arrivals increased from around 29 million in 2013 to 49 million in 2017 while the number of foreign tourist visitors grew from 288,143 in 2013 to 781,197 in 2017. During the same period, the average annual growth rate was 19.9 % for foreign tourists and 10.2% for domestic tourists. The strength of the domestic economy is the main driving factor.

Regency of Magelang (where TDA Borobudur is located) recorded 4,511,917 overall visitors in 2017. The majority were archipelago tourist visitors (4,265,252) and the rest (246,665) were foreign tourist visitors. The most popular destination in Magelang is Borobudur Temple. Other destinations around Borobudur such as Mendut and Pawon Temples, Punthuk Setumbu, and Bukit Rhema (also known as Chicken Church) are visited by less than 500,000 people in total. Comparison of domestic and foreign tourist visitors to the destination in Kab. Magelang is illustrated in the table and diagram below.

In Prambanan TDA, the sites most visited in 2017 are Prambanan Temple (2.2 million visits) followed by Breksi Cliff (close to 0.9 million) and Ratu Boko (0.4 million). The Ramayana Ballet shows are popular and the number of spectators is calculated separately from the attractions of the temple itself. A total of 13,941 visitors were recorded in the temples in Prambanan-Klaten but this number was not broken down into different temples and appeared to be very small in number, given the crowds at Plaosan Temple on an average Saturday afternoon, and the popularity of the Twin Temple Festival held at there (in the third year of 2018). The number is not broken down into Domestic and International tourists, although the overall figure is provided by the Klaten Regency Culture, Tourism, Youth & Sports Agency.
